Country report

During 2017, the third phase of the Life Extension Plan (PLEX) for the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) began, and included the replacement of steam generators, pressure pipes, calandrian tubes and feeders, among other main components. The first stage consisted in a state analysis of the plant components. During the second phase, changes were verified and necessary equipment and materials were acquired. PLEX allows the NPP to extend its plant life by another 25 years. In addition, its gross installed capacity will increase to 683 MWe, which translates to an additional 6% generation capacity.

At the beginning of 2017, the IAEA carried out an audit for the construction of an industrial uranium plant, the New Uranium Plant (NPU), which belongs to Dioxitek SA. The audit received positive feedback on its engineering and its alignment to internationally required security standards.

In May 2018, authorities in the nuclear sector received the fundamental components of the electricity generation system for CAREM 25 at the Atucha Complex, and these will become part of its balance of plant (BOP) – a set of facilities and equipment necessary for power generation.
